Do not choose by brand reputation or a stranger’s description of “warm” and “detailed.” Match the cartridge’s output, recommended load, and cable capacitance first. Gain that is too low sounds weak and raises downstream noise; gain that is too high can overload the next stage.

iFi ZEN Phono 3: more range at the low-output end
iFi assigns its four gain modes to moving magnet, high-output moving coil, low-output moving coil, and very-low-output moving coil. The 72 dB position is the key capability: it covers cartridges whose output would leave many budget stages short of gain.
Loading is adjusted independently. MM and high-output MC modes use 47k ohm with either 100 or 200 pF; low and very-low MC modes offer 1k, 400, and 100 ohm. Those steps do not cover every possible cartridge recommendation, but they span common starting points.
The 4.4 mm balanced output is useful only if the next component accepts the appropriate balanced connection. It does not make the turntable input balanced, and buying an adapter for an RCA-only amplifier defeats the reason to choose it.
iFi’s subsonic filter is intended to reduce very-low-frequency energy from record warp without simply cutting ordinary bass. That can protect amplifier headroom and woofer travel in a system where warped records cause visible cone movement.

Schiit Mani 2: compact flexibility for mainstream systems
Mani 2 provides 33, 42, 48, and 60 dB gain. That progression is particularly useful for moving-magnet cartridges, moving-iron designs, and high- to moderate-output MC models. It also offers 47k, 200, 47, and 38-ohm resistance positions plus four capacitance choices from 47 to 200 pF.
The capacitance range is a strength for MM cartridges, whose high-frequency response depends on total capacitive load. Remember that the phono cable and turntable wiring contribute capacitance before the preamp setting is added.
Mani 2’s controls sit on the underside. That keeps the front clean and discourages casual changes, but it is inconvenient during cartridge setup. Power the system down before turning the unit over or changing switches.
Its filter is switchable, and output is conventional RCA. For most integrated amplifiers and powered speakers with analog line input, that is all the connectivity required.

The Mani 2 compromise
It cannot provide the ZEN’s 72 dB mode or balanced output. The 38-, 47-, and 200-ohm MC load choices may not land on a cartridge maker’s exact recommendation. Underside switches also make repeated comparison less convenient than iFi’s front controls.
A reliable setup sequence
- Find the cartridge’s output voltage and recommended gain or cartridge type.
- Find its recommended load resistance. For MM, note recommended capacitance as well.
- Add estimated phono-cable capacitance to the preamp setting.
- Start at the nearest conservative gain and recommended load.
- Power down before changing any switch or cable.
- Compare at matched listening volume; louder often sounds “better” even when nothing else improved.
- Watch woofers for excessive low-frequency pumping and engage the filter if record warp is the cause.

iFi ZEN Phono 3 is the more capable endpoint for very-low-output moving coil, balanced connection, and frequent setting changes. Schiit Mani 2 is the sharper value when a mainstream MM or moderate-output MC cartridge fits within 33–60 dB and the system is RCA throughout.
Start with the cartridge data sheet. Once the electrical match is right, auditioning becomes meaningful; before that, it is mostly guesswork at different volume levels.
